I recently received a sponsored LinkedIn message that looked very professional.
The message claimed my background matched “some of our paid board and advisory positions that we have been retained to search for and present candidates to.” It included a Calendly link inviting me to schedule a call.
At first glance, it seems like a great opportunity.
Unfortunately, this is a well-known bait-and-switch tactic used by certain companies.
How the Tactic Works
- They send a sponsored LinkedIn message that makes it sound like they already have real paid board seats waiting for candidates.
- They invite you to book a short call via Calendly.
- On the call, instead of presenting actual board opportunities, they try to sell you a paid membership (usually a setup fee + monthly subscription).
There is no specific retained search for you. The goal is to convert you into a paying member of their platform.
Clear Red Flags
- Completely generic message (sent to thousands of people)
- No company names or specific board roles mentioned
- You cannot reply to the message — only click the link
- The calendar link often contains outdated parameters
What Real Board Opportunities Look Like
Legitimate paid board and advisory roles rarely come through cold sponsored messages. They usually come through:
- Warm introductions and personal networks
- Executive search firms hired by the company
- Strong personal brand and visibility in your industry
- Nonprofit board experience as a first step
Bottom Line
If you receive a similar message, do not book the call until you have done your own research.
